During the Kagyu Gunchoe debate competition, to prevent it encouraging competitiveness between shedras, the monks are organised into inter-shedra teams.
Two sets of judges allocate marks for the teams; one set adjudicates Validity and Prajnaparamita, and the other set adjudicates Collected Topics, Mind and Awareness and Types of Evidence. It fell to Khenpo Karma Choephel to announce the marks and name the teams that would progress to the next stage of the competition. The marks awarded to each group were displayed on two screens.
In Validity (Tsema) and Prajnaparamita (Pharchin) there were eight teams in each topic, but in Collected Topics (Dupa), Mind and Awareness (Lorig), and Types of Evidence (Tarig) there were only four teams in each topic, so the second stage of the competition is ordered differently. In Validity and Prajnaparamita, four teams in each topic progress to the semi-finals, and then the winners of the semi-finals compete in the final. In Collected Topics, Mind and Awareness and Types of Evidence, the teams that achieved first or second position in each topic, go on directly to compete in the final.
