The annual Winter Debate Gathering of Kagyu shedras, sponsored by Kun Kyong Charitable Trust, was inaugurated today.
This year’s Gunchoe is being held at Vajra Vidya Institute in Varanasi, India, and is being co-ordinated by Vajra Vidhya Institute. Nine shedras, from India, Nepal and Bhutan, are participating:

The first ceremony of the day was held at the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, not far from the great Dhamekh Stupa, near where Lord Buddha first turned the Wheel of Dharma. The khenpos offered a new set of silk robes and bowls of traditional offerings to the golden image of Shakyamuni Buddha and recited the Sutra of Turning the Wheel of Dharma.
Later in the morning, the monks gathered in the grounds of Vajra Vidhya to receive the portrait of the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa which was processed into the main shrine hall and placed on the throne. Prayers were said, and a symbolic mandala offering was made to the Gyalwang Karmapa. Everyone celebrated the occasion with sweet rice and butter tea.
